Working from the office vs home: what it means for mental health

Comfy clothes and no commute are lovely, but connection, routine and separation matter more than we realise.

Working from the office vs home: what it means for mental health

Working from home certainly has its perks - no commute, comfy clothes, and easy access to the kettle. But as many people have discovered over the past few years, spending every workday at home isn't always the best thing for our mental health. For many professionals, being in an office environment can make a real difference to how they feel day to day.

One of the biggest benefits is simple human interaction. When you work in an office, you naturally chat with colleagues, share ideas, and have those small everyday conversations that break up the day. Even quick chats in the kitchen or a laugh between meetings can lift your mood and reduce feelings of isolation. At home, it's easy for hours - or even days - to pass with very little social contact.

Offices also help create a clear boundary between work and personal life. When your workspace is separate from your living space, it's easier to switch off at the end of the day. At home, work can slowly creep into evenings and weekends, which can lead to stress and burnout over time.

There's also something powerful about the sense of routine an office provides. Getting up, getting ready, and heading into a workspace helps structure the day and creates a mental shift into "work mode". For many people, that structure helps with motivation, focus, and overall wellbeing.

Finally, offices often bring a sense of community and shared purpose. Being around others who are working, collaborating, and solving problems together can be energising. It reminds you that you're part of something bigger than just the tasks on your screen.

Of course, remote work still has its place, and many people now enjoy a mix of both. But for mental health, the social connection, routine, and clear separation that an office provides can make a meaningful difference. Sometimes, simply being around other people is exactly what we need.
